What tests are done on hurricane protection windows to make them impact-proof?

The most comprehensive test certification for hurricane protection windows is the Miami-Dade County Hurricane Certification. This test certification measures the strength of the window using a series of tests that simulate high winds, pressure differentials, water penetration, and flying debris impacts. There are total six tests within this certification and the window must pass all of them in order to be considered as hurricane-proof. These tests includes the following:

 

  • The Missile Impact Test
  • Cyclic Wind Pressure Test
  • Dynamic Water Resistance Test
  • Structural Load Test
  • Forced Entry Test
  • Air Infiltration Test

 

These tests are designed to simulate the conditions that impact windows and doors may be subjected to during a hurricane, and are used to ensure that these products meet certain performance standards and provide adequate protection against wind, rain, and other hazards.

 

Out of these six tests, the missile impact test and cyclic wind pressure test are the most important ones as these are designed to measure the impact and pressure a hurricane proof window can withstand. Let’s find out more about these two tests.

The missile impact test

It is not uncommon for missile tests to be conducted on impact windows to evaluate their performance in resisting damage from high-velocity projectiles. Impact windows are designed to withstand the impact of flying debris and other objects, such as missiles, and are often used in buildings and other structures to provide protection against natural disasters and other hazards.

 

During a missile test, the impact window is typically mounted on a test stand and subjected to the impact of a missile or other projectile fired at it at a high velocity. The test measures the performance of the window in terms of its ability to resist damage and prevent penetration by the projectile.

 

 There are two types of missile test which are as follow:

  • The Large Missile Test –  The test involves firing a missile, typically a 2′ by 4′ wooden board weighing 9 pounds, at the window at a high velocity, typically around 50 feet per second. The missile is fired from a cannon or other device that is capable of launching it at the required velocity. In order to pass this test, a window or door must be able to resist the impact of the above mentioned projectile. The test is typically conducted on windows that are installed in buildings that are less than 30 feet tall, as these buildings are more vulnerable to windborne debris in the event of a hurricane or other natural disaster.


  • The Small Missile Test- For windows installed in buildings that are over 30 feet in height, the small missile test is required to ensure their impact resistance. This test involves firing ten small steel balls from a cannon at the window at a speed of 89 miles per hour. The balls are intended to simulate the impact of small projectiles that could be driven by high winds, such as hail or debris. The window must remain intact and not allow the balls to pass through in order to pass the test.
Cyclic Wind Pressure Test 

This test is used to evaluate the performance of hurricane windows under cyclical wind pressure conditions. This means that the test simulates the wind pressures that a window or building product may experience during a severe storm, such as a hurricane.

During the test, the window or building product is placed in a special machine called a pressure chamber. The pressure chamber applies a series of positive and negative pressure cycles to the product. A positive pressure cycle is when the wind pressure on the outside of the window is higher than the pressure on the inside, while a negative pressure cycle is when the wind pressure on the inside of the window is higher than the pressure on the outside. The pressure is typically measured in pounds per square foot. To pass this test, a window must withstand the pressure of 4500 positive and 4500 negative cycles in the pressure chamber. 

The purpose of the Cyclic Wind Pressure Test is to determine how well the window can withstand the cyclical wind pressures that it may encounter during hurricanes. 

What regions are prone to hurricanes?

These materials are more resistant to damage and wear and tear than other materials. Moreover, the thickness and type of glass are also important. Always choose thick and dense laminated glass for better protection and safety.
