If you’ve gotten aluminum doors and windows installed in your home, then you’ve made a great choice! Aluminum is a durable material that brings many benefits, and is extremely long lasting. However, in order to ensure that it remains in top shape and lasts you a long while to come, you need to take the proper steps to keep it well-maintained. These aluminum frames need proper care and cleaning to keep them looking as good as new.
What to Use
Often times, just water can be enough to clean off any soil or debris left behind on the frames. If you need a little more than just water, then you can create a mild soapy solution and use that. Don’t get too vigorous! Use a soft brush along with the solution to lightly scrub off any particles. It’s important to not let the solution dry off on the aluminum – wipe off any dampness with a dry cloth.
If you need something that packs more of a punch, then a solvent cleaner can get the job done. However, do a patch test first to ensure it won’t damage the frame. Ethanol or Methanol are good options for a light solvent cleansing, followed by a water rinse. Letting the solvent cleaner dry off on the frame is never a good idea, so make sure to do the dry cloth wipe here as well.
The Basic Cleaning Process
For outdoor aluminum frames, you can use your hose to get off excess dirt to make the process simpler. Then you can use your damp cloth – doused in whatever solution you’re using – and start wiping from the top towards the bottom. Rinse with water once you’re done, and wipe off the dampness with a dry cloth. Repeat on the interior side – minus the hose, of course. To get a nice polished look going, you can use steel wool and water. If the frame looks too faded, whether it’s due to time or the ravages of weather, you can even use car wax to give it back its shine.
