What are impact windows and doors?

Impact windows and doors are designed to withstand the impact of flying debris, strong winds, and heavy rain during a hurricane or extreme weather conditions. They consist of two or more panes of a special type of glass that are bonded together with a layer of plastic interlayer. This interlayer helps to hold the glass in place and prevent it from breaking or shattering. The glass itself is usually thicker and heavier than standard windows, providing extra protection against the elements.

These impact windows which are also known as hurricane protection windows are designed to deflect, absorb, and dissipate the forces of strong winds and heavy rain. The glass panes are designed to flex and bend when impacted, dispersing the energy from the impact over a larger area. This reduces the amount of force that is applied to the windows and doors, preventing them from shattering or breaking apart.

Additionally, the window frames are usually made of reinforced aluminum, providing extra strength and protection. In residential buildings, french doors being entrance doors are ideal for storm protection and should be replaced with impact-resistant products.

What tests are done on hurricane protection windows to make them impact-proof?

In order to make sure that the windows are strong enough and perform as expected, they undergo a number of tests. The most comprehensive test certification for hurricane protection windows is the Miami-Dade County Hurricane Certification. This test certification measures the strength of the window using a series of tests that simulate high winds, pressure differentials, water penetration, and flying debris impacts. There are total six tests within this certification and the window must pass all of them in order to be considered as hurricane-proof. These tests includes the following:

  • The Missile Impact Test
  • Cyclic Wind Pressure Test
  • Dynamic Water Resistance Test
  • Structural Load Test
  • Forced Entry Test
  • Air Infiltration Test

These tests are designed to simulate the conditions that impact windows and doors may be subjected to during a hurricane, and are used to ensure that these products meet certain performance standards and provide adequate protection against wind, rain, and other hazards.

Out of these six tests, the missile impact test and cyclic wind pressure test are the most important ones as these are designed to measure the impact and pressure a hurricane proof window can withstand. Let’s find out more about these two tests.

The missile impact test

It is not uncommon for missile tests to be conducted on impact windows to evaluate their performance in resisting damage from high-velocity projectiles. Impact windows are designed to withstand the impact of flying debris and other objects, such as missiles, and are often used in buildings and other structures to provide protection against natural disasters and other hazards.

During a missile test, the impact window is typically mounted on a test stand and subjected to the impact of a missile or other projectile fired at it at a high velocity. The test measures the performance of the window in terms of its ability to resist damage and prevent penetration by the projectile.

There are two types of missile test which are as follow:

  • The Large Missile Test –  The test involves firing a missile, typically a 2′ by 4′ wooden board weighing 9 pounds, at the window at a high velocity, typically around 50 feet per second. The missile is fired from a cannon or other device that is capable of launching it at the required velocity. In order to pass this test, a window or door must be able to resist the impact of the above mentioned projectile. The test is typically conducted on windows that are installed in buildings that are less than 30 feet tall, as these buildings are more vulnerable to windborne debris in the event of a hurricane or other natural disaster.

  • The Small Missile Test- For windows installed in buildings that are over 30 feet in height, the small missile test is required to ensure their impact resistance. This test involves firing ten small steel balls from a cannon at the window at a speed of 89 miles per hour. The balls are intended to simulate the impact of small projectiles that could be driven by high winds, such as hail or debris. The window must remain intact and not allow the balls to pass through in order to pass the test.
Cyclic Wind Pressure Test

This test is used to evaluate the performance of hurricane windows under cyclical wind pressure conditions. This means that the test simulates the wind pressures that a window or building product may experience during a severe storm, such as a hurricane.

During the test, the window or building product is placed in a special machine called a pressure chamber. The pressure chamber applies a series of positive and negative pressure cycles to the product. A positive pressure cycle is when the wind pressure on the outside of the window is higher than the pressure on the inside, while a negative pressure cycle is when the wind pressure on the inside of the window is higher than the pressure on the outside. The pressure is typically measured in pounds per square foot. To pass this test, a window must withstand the pressure of 4500 positive and 4500 negative cycles in the pressure chamber.

The purpose of the Cyclic Wind Pressure Test is to determine how well the window can withstand the cyclical wind pressures that it may encounter during hurricanes.

What regions are prone to hurricanes?

Hurricanes are most common in tropical and subtropical regions, such as the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of the United States, Central America, and the Caribbean. These areas are at risk for frequent and often intense hurricanes due to their location in the path of tropical storms and the warm sea surface temperatures that fuel these storms.

According to data from the National Hurricane Center (NHC), an average of about six hurricanes form in the Atlantic Ocean each year, and about three of these hurricanes reach the United States. The states that are most frequently affected by hurricanes are those along the Gulf Coast and the East Coast, including South Florida, Louisiana, Texas, and the Carolinas. These states are most at risk due to their proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, which are both areas where hurricanes commonly form.

However, hurricanes can also occur in other parts of the world, such as the western Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean. In recent years, the United States has also seen an increase in hurricanes making landfall on the Gulf Coast and southeastern states. Thus, it is important for people living in any hurricane-prone region to make sure their homes are equipped with the proper impact windows and doors. This will provide them with the protection needed to keep their family safe in the event of a hurricane.

What are the benefits of impact windows?

Impact windows and doors offer a number of benefits to homeowners, business owners, and commercial buildings. These include protection, security, enhanced durability, noise reduction, improved property value, and many others. Let’s discuss these benefits in more detail.

Protection

Impact windows and doors provide superior protection against strong winds and torrential rains. This is due to their impact-resistant glass, which can withstand the force of wind gusts up to 140 mph (225 kph).

As such, these windows and doors can protect buildings from hurricane-force winds, flying debris, and other projectiles during storms. It has been observed that homes and buildings with impact windows suffer less damage in hurricanes than in those without. Due to this many building authorities in hurricane-prone regions require the installation of impact windows as a safety measure.

Energy efficiency

Energy efficiency and environmental protection is the second most important benefit of these windows. The following are some ways in which these impact-resistant windows are helping people and the environment:

  • Insulating against heat and cold – The laminated glass used in these windows helps to insulate the building against heat and cold, reducing the need for heating and cooling systems to work as hard to maintain a comfortable temperature. Ultimately, this helps to reduce energy costs.
  • Reducing drafts – Impact windows provide a tighter seal against the elements, helping to reduce drafts and keep out cold air in the winter and hot air in the summer. This also helps in the reduction of energy consumption of a building.
  • Reducing solar heat gain – Solar heat gain is when the sun’s rays are able to penetrate a building, heating up the interior. Impact windows reduce this solar heat gain by reflecting some of the sun’s energy. This helps to keep buildings cooler in the summer and more comfortable for occupants.
  • Enhancing natural light – Natural light is important in any building, and impact windows allow more light to enter a building while still providing protection.
Security

Security is one of the major problems in many parts of the world, and this is the reason most businesses and homeowners take preventive measures to ensure their safety. Impact windows and doors provide an extra layer of security against intruders, as they can withstand extreme force and the glass itself is unbreakable. This makes it impossible for any intruder to break through the window or door without making a loud noise that is likely to alert someone inside or outside the building. This is the reason, most commercial buildings like banks, jewelry stores, etc. make use of impact windows and doors to provide extra security against theft, vandalism, and burglary.

Durability

Impact-resistant windows and doors are also highly durable, as they have been constructed using heavy-duty materials such as aluminum, or vinyl that can withstand the force of strong winds and rains. As a result, these windows do not break easily, even in storms or hurricanes. Additionally, the glass used in the windows is designed to absorb shock and remain intact even if it is hit with a heavy object.

Moreover, aluminum and vinyl are waterproof materials, which means they are resistant to rot, mildew and mold, helping them to last longer. Besides that, the laminated glass of these windows will block out harmful UV rays which are not only injurious to human health but also cause fading and deterioration of furniture, carpets, and other household items.

Noise reduction

Noise pollution is a major cause of concern in many cities. The traffic noise, the noise of flying airplanes, construction noise, and the barking noise of your neighbor’s dog can cause great distress. To cope with this noise pollution impact windows and doors are great tools. They can help to block out all this unwanted noise, creating a peaceful environment inside the house or office.

The laminated glass used in these windows and doors works as a barrier by trapping sound waves before they reach the interior of the building. This helps to reduce indoor noise levels, making it easier for people to concentrate on their work or relax in peace.

What are the different types of impact windows?

There are several types of impact windows available on the market, including single-hung impact windows, double-hung impact windows, sliding impact windows, casement impact windows, bay and bow impact windows, picture impact windows, and others. However, when it comes to the material of the frame, these windows usually come in two options – aluminum and vinyl.

  • Vinyl impact windows – Vinyl impact windows are made from fiberglass, which offers superior insulation and noise reduction benefits. Additionally, these windows come with a low maintenance requirement as they do not require painting or staining.
  • Aluminum impact windows – Aluminum impact metal frames provide excellent strength while remaining lightweight. They also have fire-resistant properties and offer superior security against intruders. Furthermore, aluminum is also known for its durability and resistance to corrosion.

Which one is better: Vinyl or aluminum hurricane-proof windows?

When it comes to choosing impact windows, both vinyl and aluminum can be good options. Both materials have their own unique set of benefits and drawbacks, and the best choice will depend on your specific needs and preferences.

Here are a few key differences between vinyl and aluminum impact windows:

  • Durability: Aluminum impact windows tend to be more durable and long-lasting than vinyl windows. Aluminum is a strong and corrosion-resistant material that can withstand extreme weather conditions and heavy use.

  • Energy efficient: Vinyl impact windows tend to be more energy efficient than aluminum windows. Vinyl is a good insulator, which can help to reduce heat transfer and keep a building warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

  • Cost: Vinyl impact windows are generally less expensive than aluminum windows. This is because vinyl is a less expensive material than aluminum, so it tends to be more affordable to produce and purchase.

  • Maintenance: Both vinyl and aluminum impact windows require minimal maintenance. However, aluminum windows may require more frequent cleaning due to their tendency to collect dirt and grime more easily.

Ultimately, the choice between vinyl and aluminum impact windows will depend on your specific needs and priorities. If you are looking for a more durable and long-lasting window, aluminum may be the better choice. If energy and cost are your main concerns, vinyl windows may be the better option. It may be helpful to weigh the pros and cons of each material and consider your budget and specific needs before making a decision.

Impact windows vs hurricane shutters

Impact windows and doors are not the only options for protecting your home from hurricanes. Hurricane shutters are another option that is also used for protection and safety from hurricanes and strong weather. Each option has its own unique set of benefits and drawbacks, and the best choice depends on your specific needs and preferences.

The following are a few key differences between impact windows and hurricane or storm shutters:

  • Cost- Impact windows tend to be more expensive than hurricane shutters. This is because impact windows are made of laminated glass that is held in place by a sturdy frame, while hurricane shutters are typically made of less expensive materials such as aluminum or poly-carbonate. Moreover, the impact windows also have insulation capabilities that are not found in shutters.

  • Ease of use- Hurricane shutters are generally easier to fix and remove than impact windows. Impact windows are typically installed by a professional and are not meant to be removed, while hurricane shutters can be easily installed and removed by homeowners as needed.

  • Energy consumption- Impact windows provide better insulation than hurricane shutters, which helps to improve energy efficiency by keeping out drafts and minimizing heat transfer. This also helps in reducing a significant amount of electricity or heating bill.

  • Aesthetics- When it comes to aesthetics, shutters cannot beat windows. Impact windows are more attractive than hurricane shutters, as they provide a clear view of the outside and allow for natural light to enter a building. Hurricane shutters, on the other hand, can obstruct the view and block out natural light when they are closed.

So, when it comes to choosing between the two, consider your budget and specific needs. Impact windows provide more protection from hurricanes and strong weather, as well as better insulation for energy saving, but come with a higher price tag. Hurricane shutters are less expensive than impact windows and easier to install or remove, but may not offer the same level of protection or insulation. Therefore, choose impact windows and doors as nothing is more precious than your life.

The best time to buy hurricane windows and doors

If you are a wholesaler or construction contractor, the best time to buy impact windows and doors is during the off-season, which is typically after the hurricane season ends. The hurricane season typically runs from June 1 to November 30 in the Atlantic Ocean and from May 15 to November 30 in the eastern Pacific Ocean, so the best time to buy would be during the winter months, from December to May,  when manufacturers are usually offering their best prices for the year. Buying during winter months will help to ensure that you are getting the best prices and quality products. Moreover, you will have plenty of time for checking these windows and doors for any existing damage.

As you know most of the manufacturers are sitting in China, therefore, it is important to factor in the production time and shipping time when placing your order. Production time can vary depending on the manufacturer, but it is typically around 4-8 weeks for custom orders. Shipping time from China to the United States can take anywhere from 1-6 weeks, depending on the mode of transportation and the port of arrival.

It is a good idea to place your order as early as possible to allow for adequate time for production and shipping. You should also consider any additional lead time that may be needed for installation once the windows and doors arrive. It is best to plan ahead and place orders well in advance to ensure timely delivery.

How to choose high-rated impact windows?

When shopping for impact windows, it’s important to consider the following factors to ensure you are getting a high-quality product:

  • Testing – Look for impact windows and doors that have undergone rigorous testing and meet certain standards for performance and safety, such as the DP and water penetration tests mentioned earlier. But how could you know that the window has passed these tests? You can ask for a label from the manufacturer that states which tests have been performed and if the product meets the required standard. For the DP test always go for the highest level of protection such as DP 50 or even higher. And for a large missile test, always go for the highest level of protection such as large missile level C.

  • Material – Material is also an important factor to determine the quality of the window or door. It is advisable to choose a durable material such as vinyl or aluminum. These materials are more resistant to damage and wear and tear than other materials. Moreover, the thickness and type of glass are also important. Always choose thick and dense laminated glass for better protection and safety.

  • Look for windows with a high impact resistance rating – This is also another important factor. Impact resistance ratings measure a window’s ability to withstand strong winds and flying debris. The higher the rating, the stronger the window and the safer it is. Always look for windows with a high impact resistance rating, such as those rated for wind speeds of 180 mph or higher.

  • Check for certification – Certifications are visual evidence that the product has met certain performance standards. Look for windows that are certified by organizations such as the American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA), NFRC, ANSI, and ASTM. These organizations test and certify windows for their insulation, air leakage, and impact resistance. Certifications from these organizations ensure that the window meets safety and quality standards set by industry experts.

  • Consider the type of glass used – The most important part of an impact window or door is the glass. Therefore, there should be no compromise on the quality of glass used in the impact-resistant window and door. Impact windows are typically made of laminated glass, which consists of two layers of glass with a layer of plastic in between. Look for windows that use laminated glass that is at least 1/4 inch thick, as this will provide increased protection against wind and debris.

  • Energy saving – If energy saving is a priority, look for impact windows and doors that are ENERGY STAR certified or have a high R-value, which measures the product’s ability to resist heat transfer. The higher the rating, the more energy efficient the product is.
